Saw this video at The Third Teacher Plus Salon in Phoenix last week.  I thought it was great and I had to share!

Language and framing in entrepreneurship education

cc Instant Vantage

The terribly busy and frantic fall term has wrapped and spring term has commenced.  Unfortunately, I have been extremely absent on here.  My apologies!  I will try to get back into the groove of posting every couple of weeks or so.

Anyhow, I would like discuss the importance of language and framing in entrepreneurship education in this post.  Dr. Kris Ewing and I worked to revamp the Entrepreneurial Educators curriculum and present the material in a slightly different way last fall.  Who knew subtle changes could make a huge difference in student performance?!?  Simple changes like presenting the material in a sequence rather than segmented, increasing peer communication, and providing easy access to course material really proved to make a difference in student learning outcomes.  We were very pleased with the final product that our students presented and even provided them with a platform to showcase their ideas to a larger audience. #Twitter4Good Change the world one tweet at a time

It may come as no surprise that I am a huge fan of Twitter.  I believe Twitter is a powerful tool for educators and others interested in driving social change.  When I heard about Claire Diaz-Ortiz’s book, Twitter for Good: Change the World One Tweet at a Time, I knew that I had to obtain a copy to help hone my Twitter skills.  Twitter for Good provides necessary strategies for individuals and organizations looking to promote social change.  Since reading the book, I have implemented Diaz-Ortiz’s suggestions and have seen growth in my followership and have a better sense of how to engage others on Twitter.  I have also noticed I am more aware of users on Twitter not utilizing the tool to its full potential.  The book has made me realize that there is definitely a strategical approach to using the social media website.  Therefore, I highly recommend everyone interested in engaging and capturing an audience on Twitter read this book and implement the tips and strategies suggested within the book.

Two thumbs up! Easy read and practical applications!

A reflection on lessons learned

As we move into our third offering of HED 691: Entrepreneurial Educators, there are several lessons our team has learned and several challenges we continue to work through as we move forward.  I would like to elaborate on one lesson learned in this brief post: pushing the limits without losing sight of our overall goal.

Keeping up with the entrepreneurs

cc Thomas Hawk

There is much to be said about the world of entrepreneurship; the people, the culture, the environment, and the never-ending amount of information available to entrepreneurs. The vast amounts of information and resources available on the web are incredible; I have learned so much about entrepreneurship simply from surfing the net and networking on Twitter. Still, this can be overwhelming, trying, and frustrating all at the same time. Just when I learn something new and I feel like I am ahead of the game (or at least still in the game); something new pops on the circuit and a whole new learning curve is introduced. As an entrepreneur, whether you are social – non-profit or business – for-profit, there is always something new to learn.

#Twitter is a powerful tool for entrepreneurial educators

cc Rosaura Ochoa

The Twitter forum of communication definitely takes some getting used to, as it can be frustrating, confusing, and awkward for those with little or no experience.  I have to admit, I was not 100% sold on Twitter when I first joined the social media website.  I was convinced that Twitter was simply a way for celebrities and socialites to communicate with a large audience, but I have come to recognize the value and power that Twitter holds for many.  Once you get past the confusion and learn to navigate the site and communicate in what I like to call “Twitter Talk,” you begin to unleash the power of Twitter.  Continue reading

To profit or not to profit?

cc cayusa

To profit or not to profit?  That is the question.  In the field of social entrepreneurship, funding for a venture is always a top priority and concern of social entrepreneurs.  So does a venture have to be not for profit in order to be deemed social? How do we make meaningful work financially successful?  Is this even a possibility? Continue reading
